Bicycle safety advocates pan San Francisco mayor’s “Be Nice” campaign

Mayor Ed Lee recently announced a public awareness campaign aimed at reducing the number of pedestrian and cycling accidents which occur in San Francisco.

The new “Be Nice, Look Twice,” campaign encourages motorists and other road users to be aware of their surroundings and to slow down.

“Pedestrian safety continues to be a key focus as our City grows,” said Mayor Lee. “San Francisco is a City that walks, and we all have a shared responsibility to protect and care for the most vulnerable users on our City streets.”

This new initiative was quickly panned by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition in a press release. Cycling safety experts say that the public awareness campaign was a “passive” solution for a city in which traffic crimes outnumber violent crimes two-to-one.

“Telling people to “Be Nice, Look Twice” is not a substitute for meaningful change on our streets,” cycling safety advocates wrote. “We urge Mayor Lee to step up his commitment to stemming the tide of violence by committing to Vision Zero – zero traffic deaths in ten years – and to start taking action today for public safety.”

The bicycle coalition went on to note that Mayor Lee has proposed ending the city’s Sunday parking meter program because the revenue is “not needed” while simultaneously claiming that the city lacks the funding to redesign the city’s most dangerous intersections.
