Problems With Your DePuy Metal-On-Metal Hip Replacement?

Metal-on-metal hip replacement systems were touted as an advancement. They were supposed to last years longer than previous generations of artificial hips. They were marketed as a lifestyle upgrade for active senior citizens. Instead, countless recipients of the DePuy ASR hip implant have experienced misery and irreversible harm.

From 2005 to 2010, market leader DePuy sold more than 90,000 of its ASR acetabular devices worldwide before an alarming failure rate was revealed. DePuy eventually issued a recall, but the damage was done. Tens of thousands of patients have or will endure the pain and hardships of revision surgery.

Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger was among the first firms in the country to file suit against the makers of this defective device. We are one of only three firms nationally to win at trial against DePuy. Our firm has a wealth of experience in medical product litigation, including successful recoveries for recipients of artificial joints.

We currently represent more than 200 DePuy victims, pursuing monetary damages for the devastating aftermath of ASR hip implant failure. Our firm files individual lawsuits on behalf of clients, rather than lumping their cases into a large class action. This ensures that each case is considered on its merits and compensated according to the actual harm you or your loved one suffered.

If you experienced symptoms or setbacks after a DePuy ASR hip implant, you may qualify for compensation for physical damage, additional surgeries and pain and suffering. Call us for a free, no-obligation review of your case.

A Staggering Rate Of Failure – Do You Need Revision Surgery?

In its product recall in August 2010, DePuy admitted to failure rates of 12 percent for ASR cups used in hip resurfacing procedures and 13 percent for cups used in total hip replacement surgeries. While those numbers are already well above the industry average, reports from the field now suggest an even greater failure rate for DePuy’s ASR implants. Surgeons and medical experts who have tracked problems with ASR acetabular cups in the U.S. and Europe now project that nearly half of all recipients may require revision surgery within six years of the original operation.

Thousands of people who received DePuy hip implants have experienced serious symptoms and complications:

  • Chronic hip, groin or back pain
  • Clicking, crunching or squeaking sounds in the joint
  • Popping or sensation that the hip is not in its socket
  • Limping, instability or lost range of motion
  • Metallosis (leaching of metallic particles into the body)
  • Bone and soft tissue erosion near the implant
  • Pseudotumors
  • Compromised immune system

Many recipients are unable to walk because of the side effects. The only remedy is revision surgery to remove the failed implant and replace it with a different hip system. This procedure is invasive, painful and risky, followed by months of rehab and recovery. Sadly, some recipients of failed implants are no longer candidates for hip replacement because metallosis has so degraded the surrounding tissues.
