Internationally Renowned Doctors Warned of Defective DePuy Device

Doctors in England Correctly Predicted the ASR's Defects

Dr. Derek McMinn has practiced for almost three decades as an orthopedic surgeon in the United Kingdom. For the last 19 years, he has worked to develop prosthetic hip implant devices, including the Birmingham Hip Replacement. Thanks to his work and his reputation in the field, he is commonly thought of as the "father of hip resurfacing." He now runs the McMinn Centre in Birmingham, England.

Dr. McMinn has performed more than 6,000 hip implants, 3,600 of which were metal-on-metal Birmingham Hip Replacement procedures.

As early as 2005 — the year the ASR was approved for marketing in the United States — Dr. McMinn predicted that the DePuy ASR device would have an unacceptably high failure rate. Dr. McMinn pointed out that the ASR is smaller in size than the Birmingham Hip Replacement. The reason for the smaller size was that DePuy had to change the tool surgeons used to insert it into the acetabulum. Originally, the plan was to use a suction tool with an acetabular cup approximately the same size as the Birmingham cup. But when DePuy's suction tool proved ineffective, the company had to turn to a locking metallic tool that actually locked into the ASR acetabular cup until the device was set into the bone. To accommodate this locking metal tool, DePuy decided to reduce the rim size of its ASR cup by about 5 degrees. As a result, DePuy made the ASR less forgiving for implanting surgeons — and more prone to failure.
