San Francisco Bard Recovery IVC Filter Lawyers

Bard Recovery filters were developed for the purpose of surgical placement in order to protect patients from dangerous blood clots. But history has proven that the devices themselves are potentially deadly.

With decades of experience providing world-class legal representation, the California law firm Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger represents clients in injury and wrongful death claims stemming from defective medical devices that include IVC filters.

The Dangers Of IVC Filters

Bard filters are traditionally implanted in the inferior vena cava (IVC) to trap and prevent blood clots from traveling to the brain, heart and other areas. The Recovery filter was intended to prevent clots from forming in order to prevent stroke and brain injury.

But medical science now knows there are serious potential side effects of the Bard IVC filter. The filters themselves are prone to fracture, and pieces of the fractured device can be carried away by blood flow and cause injuries just as serious, or more serious, than the strokes they were intended to prevent. In addition to this fracturing, the filter can migrate and perforate, puncture or cause serious damage to the heart, lungs and brain. The device itself may produce a pulmonary embolus, infection or injury at the location where the fracture fragments migrate.

The FDA issued an alert concerning IVC filters in May 2014. The FDA has warned that IVC filters should be removed as soon as the risk of a pulmonary embolus is gone. The FDA has determined that the possible risk of injury or retained IVC filter is greater than any potential benefit which results from leaving the filter in place.

The medical device team at Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger currently represents patients who have suffered injury as a result of migrating Bard filter fragments.
