Class-action lawsuit over Cellphones

Many of LG’s mobile phones have been targeted by lawsuits due to poor performance.

How Serious is the Issue?

Some of the allegations include a “boot-looping” problem, where the phone constantly powers up, turns off and reboots – a never-ending cycle. There are also complaints of battery power drain, where the device is rendered useless in a short amount of time.

The issues impact a person’s ability to stay connected to the modern world but pale in comparison to the safety problems the Samsung Note 7 manifest, with the lithium batteries of the phone becoming so hot that the phones were exploding, endangering the lives of the cellphone owner, and anyone around them.

These problems are allegedly being fixed, as the phone has been recalled. But this is a high-profile example of cellphones having massive defects that put people at risk. Will we see more problems like this in the future? It is likely, given the ubiquitous and necessary nature of cellphones in today’s society.

Defective products are a fact of life but those that can harm are unacceptable. All manufacturers are supposed to make sure that when they release a product to the public for consumption that it is safe and working properly. When they fail to ensure their customers’ safety, they can be held liable for their negligence.
