Walkup Donates $1 Million To UC Hastings Law

SAN FRANCISCO – Three alums known as Michael A. Kelly 76′, Matthew Davis ’89, and Richard Schoenberger ’89 with the help of their law firm, Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger recently donated $1 million to their local law school known as UC Hastings Law. Over the years they have brought endless claims on behalf of their plaintiff for personal injury, defective products, premises liability, and traffic collisions to name a few. Over the course of their career, they have managed multimillion-dollar settlements and verdicts and for decades have taken the time to teach trial advocacy.

The donation will help fund the Dean’s Discretionary Fund giving David Faigman the ability to address institutional priorities like broadening educational resources, substantial student support and the ability to maintain a top-tier educational facility. Following the donation, the law school is now offering the Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger Scholarship Fund. Kelly, Schoenberger, and Davis said:

“We are proud to be Hastings alums. The school has been the wind at our backs all of these years. We fully recognize the escalating and sometimes prohibitive costs of the outstanding education Hastings provides. We want others to experience the same academic excellence that we enjoyed and, with this contribution, hope to make it easier for those who have come after us.”

The Dean replied with gracious remarks saying:

“This gift demonstrates their belief in, and commitment to, the UC Hastings mission to be a center of excellence in legal education. This generous gift advances our capacity to prepare leaders – leaders in the molds of Kelly, Schoenberger, and Davis – who will one day take on the most pressing and challenging legal issues of the day.”

A Future To Build Towards

As a tribute towards the generosity of the law firm, Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger’s name will be built into the main hall of the new academic building on 333 Golden Gate Ave. The new building is expected to open in the Spring of 2020 is projected to house new students, classrooms, a couple administrative offices, and clinics. Schoenberger comments:

“There aren’t many law schools that are able to offer the type of innovation, academic rigor and level of hands-on practice that UC Hastings is able to offer its students. “With the new academic building and continued commitment to excellence, UC Hastings is shaping the future of legal education. We’re proud to support UC Hastings with this foundational gift.”
