Nearly 105,000 Honda vehicles have been added to the already massive auto recall due to defective airbags. Manufactured by auto parts supplier Takata, the airbags have been linked to several deaths, including five people killed in Honda vehicles.
Many of the top automakers in the world use Takata airbags, and have been forced to issue recalls to try to repair the defective safety devices. The airbags at issue have the tendency to inflate with too much force, causing pieces of plastic and metal to hurtle toward drivers and passengers. Around 22 million vehicles have been recalled, including 17 million in the United States alone.
Honda is Takata’s biggest customer in the U.S., USA TODAY reports. The latest expansion adds 2008 Pilot SUVs to the list of recalled vehicles, and expands the fleet of 2001 Accords and 2004 Civics that need repairs.
Other Honda vehicles that have now been recalled in 2014 or 2015, by model year include:
- 2001-2007 Honda Accord with 4-cylinder engines
- 2001-2002 Honda Accord with V-6 engines
- 2001-2005 Honda Civic
- 2002-2006 Honda CR-V
- 2003-2006 Acura MDX
- 2002-2003 Acura TL
Though automakers and federal regulators believe the excessive force defect is more likely to occur in humid areas, the recalls are nationwide. Until the airbags are all fixed, drivers and passengers remain at risk of serious injury.
