OCOOPA Hand Warmer Recall Attorney

Burn Injury Lawsuit Claims

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 1.5 million OCOOPA rechargeable hand warmers on July 30, 2026. According to the CPSC, the devices can overheat, ignite, and cause burns. OCOOPA Direct received 1,480 overheating reports, including 15 fires and 350 burn injuries. The CPSC also reported the death of an 83-year-old San Jose woman in February 2026.

In May 2026, our firm filed a wrongful death complaint in Santa Clara County Superior Court. The case, Tan v. Amazon.com, Inc., et al., No. 5:26-cv-07788, is now pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The complaint alleges that an 83-year-old California woman was using OCOOPA Quick Charge rechargeable hand warmers in bed on February 11, 2026. The devices allegedly ignited and caused severe burn injuries. She died five days later.

The complaint asserts claims for strict products liability, negligence, wrongful death, and post-sale negligence. It alleges that the hand warmers were defectively designed and manufactured. It also alleges inadequate warnings and a failure to respond to prior safety reports. These are allegations. No liability has been determined.

The CPSC announced the nationwide recall more than two months after our case was filed. Its recall notice reported the death of an 83-year-old San Jose consumer in February 2026.

What the OCOOPA Recall Covers

CPSC Recall No. 26-659 covers these rechargeable hand warmer models:

  • OCOOPA UT3053
  • OCOOPA UT3056
  • OCOOPA ZLS-118
  • OCOOPA ZLS-118S
  • OCOOPA ZLS-118D
  • OCOOPA H01
  • OCOOPA H01(PD)

The model number and three-digit batch number appear on the underside of each device. The hand warmers were sold in pairs that attach magnetically. Each unit has a USB-C charging port, adjustable heat settings, and LED indicator lights. “OCOOPA” appears on the device and packaging.

The recalled products were sold online from September 2018 through May 2026. Sellers included Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Ocoopa.com, and Ocoopa.net. Prices ranged from $15 to $60.

What Consumers Should Do About the Recall

The CPSC advises consumers to stop using recalled OCOOPA hand warmers immediately. OCOOPA Direct is offering a full refund by gift card or original payment method.

Consumers seeking a refund will be asked to mark the device “RECALLED” in permanent marker. They will also be asked to submit a photograph showing that marking, the model number, and the batch number. The CPSC directs consumers to follow local and state hazardous-waste rules when disposing of the product.

Do not place a recalled hand warmer in household trash, curbside recycling, or a retail battery box. Contact your local household hazardous waste center before disposing of the device. Ask whether it accepts defective lithium-ion batteries.

What to Do if an OCOOPA Hand Warmer Injured You

If a hand warmer caused burns or a fire, take these steps:

  • Get medical care. Burns can require prompt evaluation and follow-up treatment.
  • Preserve evidence safely. Keep the device, charger, and packaging only if safe. Do not open, alter, or test it. Do not store a hot or damaged battery in your home. Contact emergency services or hazardous-waste officials for guidance.
  • Document the incident. Photograph the device, injuries, and property damage. Keep medical, fire, and repair records.
  • Save proof of purchase. Download the order record from Amazon, Walmart, or OCOOPA.
  • Speak with an attorney before completing the refund process. Marking or disposing of the device may affect evidence. Counsel can arrange safe preservation when appropriate.

Who May Be Liable for OCOOPA Hand Warmer Injuries?

California product liability claims may involve manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers. The available claims depend on the product, the sale, and the cause of the injury.

The California Court of Appeal has held that Amazon may face strict products liability under certain marketplace transactions. In Bolger v. Amazon.com, LLC (2020) 53 Cal.App.5th 431, Amazon played a direct role in storing, processing, and shipping the product. Whether that decision applies depends on the facts of each sale. Walkup’s pending OCOOPA wrongful death case names Amazon as a defendant.

A recall does not establish civil liability. The product, purchase records, warnings, medical evidence, and circumstances of the incident remain important.

Compensation in an OCOOPA Hand Warmer Lawsuit

Compensation in a burn injury claim may include:

  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Lost income and reduced earning capacity
  • Pain, suffering, scarring, and disfigurement
  • Property damage caused by the fire

In a wrongful death claim, eligible family members may seek compensation for financial support and household services. Recoverable losses may also include care, comfort, and companionship. Funeral and burial expenses may be recoverable.

The damages available depend on the facts and applicable law.

How Long Do You Have to File a Claim?

California personal injury and wrongful death claims are generally subject to a two-year deadline under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. The deadline often runs from the date of injury or death. The correct deadline depends on the facts. Exceptions can change the filing period, and shorter deadlines may apply.

Do not wait for the recall process to end before seeking legal advice. Product evidence, online listings, photographs, and witness information can disappear.

The recall covers models UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01, and H01(PD). The model number appears on the device’s underside.

Where were the recalled hand warmers sold?

They were sold online through Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Ocoopa.com, and Ocoopa.net. Sales occurred from September 2018 through May 2026. The products cost between $15 and $60.

Can I file a lawsuit if an OCOOPA hand warmer burned me?

You may have a product liability claim if the device caused burns or other losses. Whether a claim exists depends on the device, purchase records, medical evidence, and incident facts.

Does accepting a recall refund resolve an injury claim?

The CPSC recall offers reimbursement for the device. It does not compensate for medical expenses, lost income, pain, scarring, or other injury losses. Whether a refund affects another claim depends on the facts and its terms. Speak with an attorney before marking or disposing of an injury-producing device.

What if the hand warmer was already discarded?

A claim may still be possible. Preserve order records, photographs, medical records, fire reports, and related communications. Do not discard any remaining packaging or charging equipment.

Is the OCOOPA lawsuit a class action?

Walkup’s pending case is an individual wrongful death lawsuit. It is not a class action.
