Agriculture and Paraquat Use in Central Valley
The Central Valley is the largest agricultural center in the country – growing more than 250 different crops. This area alone produces 25 percent of the nation’s food, including 40 percent of the nation’s fruit, nuts and other table foods. It isn’t surprising then, that Central Valley also has a high number of workers in the area and an equally high pesticide usage.
Paraquat ranked as one of the top five herbicides used in California. From 1992 to 2017, over five million kilograms of Paraquat (5,447,040.40) were used in the Central Valley – half the total amount of Paraquat used in California. Out of the six counties in the Central Valley, Fresno County – the heart of crop production – had the highest usage of Paraquat at over 2 million kilograms.
What is the Link Between Paraquat and Parkinson’s?
It has been found that exposure to the toxic chemicals in Paraquat can increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Paraquat kills cells through a process called oxidative stress. When people breathe in or absorb Paraquat, they start to lose dopamine neurons. The loss of dopamine neurons in the brain region results in some of the main motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
A 2009 UCLA study showed that people who simply lived near the farm areas where Paraquat and the fungicide Maneb were sprayed, had a 75 percent higher risk of developing Parksinson’s disease.
Signs of Parkinson’s Disease
In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, only one or two symptoms may show up. Common early signs may include:
- Tremor, or an involuntary shaking in one hand or another area of the body
- Small handwriting
- Loss of smell
- Difficulty sleeping
- Stiffness while walking
- Dizziness or fainting
- Constipation
- Change in voice
- Facial masking, or the loss of facial expressions
- Difficulty standing up straight
It is possible that other factors (such as stress, diet, or another sickness or injury) could also be causing these symptoms. However, if you notice you or someone you love is experiencing more than one of these signs, call your doctor.
